The slots are for Memory (RAM). DIMM is the form factor of the memory module. Note: The slots are designed to allow for upgrades. For example, going from 8GB to 16GB. At one time memory was embedded and could not be upgraded. Picture of the slots can be seen in the picture below:

If this is the case in your motherboard, and you've fried slots 1 and 2, you are no longer capable of taking advantage of dual channel on that motherboard. However it may be the case that your motherboard needs RAM paired into 1&2, and 3&4 to use dual channel, in which case, using slots 3&4 will make no difference to using slots 1&2.
